CUSTOMERS OF:

Freehold Savings & Loan

Many banks across the United States have been charging non-customers a minimal fee for using their ATM machines. This fee is charged by the bank owning the ATM machine.

If the ATM machine you are using charges for usage, the ATM machine will have a disclosure that comes up during the course of your transaction on the ATM screen and will give you the option to discontinue your ATM transaction.

Our customers may use any ATM machine owned by Freehold Savings without an additional transaction charge. Therefore, it is important for you to know which machines belong to our organization.

ATM Security Tips

Protect Your Card and PIN

Your ATM card is a like using a key to open your account information and get at your money, so don’t just leave it lying around. Keep your card in a secure place so a roommate, coworker or passerby won’t be tempted to "borrow" it. The great thing about ATM cards is that they’re still very secure if lost. Unlike a credit card, a stolen ATM card is almost impossible to use without the matching PIN. The PIN is a four-digit code that unlocks your ATM card. Because of this, it is very important that you do not write your PIN on your card. It’s best to not even keep your PIN in the same place as your ATM card. If you must write down your PIN, then try to keep the PIN in a separate place.

Report Lost Cards Immediately

It is possible for a stubborn thief to eventually figure out the PIN for a stolen card. ATMs confiscate any cards for which a PIN has been incorrectly entered three times in a row. Thieves know this, so they will try two guesses and then wait for a while before trying again. It takes a lot of time and effort to finally guess the correct PIN, but it’s best to immediately report a lost card can so you can have the card permanently blocked against use.

Keep Your Distance from the ATM User in front of You

Never stand directly behind someone who is using an ATM. Most people feel anxious about their privacy when they think someone may see their financial information. People may also worry that someone is watching their PIN number entry. Stand about five or six feet behind the user so they can enjoy their privacy.

Wait until the Last User Finishes

Do not approach the ATM until the person in front of you has completely finished their transaction. Even if you’re in a hurry, you don’t want to pressure a fellow user. The average ATM user takes less than two minutes to complete their transaction, so be patient and wait for the person in front of you to leave before you approach the machine.

Keep Your ATM Card in Hand when You Approach the ATM

You do not want to get to the ATM and then start looking through a purse or wallet to find your card. If you have your ATM card in hand, you will have a much quicker and safer transaction.

Avoid Prying Eyes

Just as you don’t wish to watch other people enter their PINs, you also want to be secure when you enter your own PIN. It’s easy to keep your PIN secure, but it requires a little awareness of where people are standing around you. After you have put your card in an ATM and you’re ready to enter the PIN, make sure that your body blocks any other person’s line-of-sight. Stand close to, and in front of, the ATM’s keypad. The computer screen will not display your PIN, but it is possible for someone to note which buttons you have pushed. This way, if you leave your card after your transaction, the next person won’t be able to easily use it.

How to Use an ATM while Keeping Safe

ATMs are usually quite safe and incidents of robbery are uncommon. However, desperate crooks may view ATM users as quick sources of income. There are a few things to remember to help ensure your safety. Most of these rules apply to ATM use if you’re alone, if there aren’t many people around, or if you’re using the ATM at night.

If you’re alone, absolutely avoid using an ATM in an unlit area at night. Always be aware of your surroundings and those around you if you do use an ATM at night. Most credit unions and banks will not have bushes or other "blind spots" near their ATMs; however, in the rare instance where there is a blind spot, avoid using that ATM at night. Don’t stand around filling out deposit slips and endorsing checks before making a deposit. If you take out money, do not stand and count your money near the machine. It’s best to fill out the paperwork or count your money when you’re away from the ATM.

If ATMs in lonely locations scare you, use one that’s inside a workplace or shopping center. Muggers are definitely not interested in committing a crime with a lot of people around. Some people use their ATM cards without ever using an ATM. How? Almost all supermarkets have "point of purchase" machines that allow you to pay for groceries and select extra cash back with your purchase. These machines are absolutely free of fees and they’re completely secure.
